GOODBYE, RICHARD CASTLE

I have to tell you, when I first read in CBS new that Stana Katic and Tamala Jones would be leaving Castle “for budgetary reasons” (Deadline), I was shocked.  You can’t have Castle without Beckett!  But I have to admit, I probably would have still watched season 9,  because I didn’t start watching Castle for Stana Katic, nothing against her.  I began watching because of Nathan Fillion.  I fell in love with him (not in the stalker sense) as Captain Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly and as Caleb in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so I knew I would continue watching Castle until the show ended.

But then the other shoe dropped.  Castle was cancelled.   But there was a ray of sunshine, because the writers had written alternate endings just in case the show wasn’t renewed, so the fans wouldn’t be left hanging. Unfortunately, when I watched the episode and (spoiler alert) saw that Castle and Beckett were shot in the last five minutes of the show, I was screaming, “NO!  They can’t kill them!”  I’m thinking, really?  That’s how you’re going to end this wonderfully clever and entertaining show after eight glorious seasons?  But then the writers throw in at the last minute of the show a “Seven Years Later” subtitle and show that Castle and Beckett are still married and have three children.

I understand, that the writers had to wrap up the entire series quickly instead of leaving the faithful fans hanging, but I was left wanting.  Yes, Castle and Beckett are the main characters, but over the years, we the fans have gotten attached to the others characters.  As a fan, I wanted to know, did Martha ever make it big on Broadway?  Did Alexis take over the detective agency?  Did Kevin ever pass the sergeant’s exam?  Did Javier and Lanie ever get together?  (Please tell me they did.  They belonged together.)

I’m happy that the fans got some answers, but I wish the studios would allow an extra episode or two to wrap up a series that they cancel at the last minute.
